Computer Science News and Events

Associated with ISEEK, the Information Security Center at WCU has initiated a collaboration with Temple University, in both research and education. The security research group at the CIS department of Temple University (see photo) will soon present their prize-winning presentations at WCU in order to motivate students to conduct security research for future networks. More student activities are scheduled at both schools. Detailed information will be announced soon.

The Women in Computer Science club is raising funds for attendance in the 2012 "Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference," which will be held in Baltimore, Maryland on October 3-6, 2012.     Dr. Agatston will give a presentation with question and answer session. This is a great opportunity for an interactive session with an authority of cyber-bullying. Attendees are invited to bring their lunch.
  • Cyber-bullying lecture. 3:30 p.m. Lecture, Sykes Student Union Theater.
    Dr. Agatston will give a lecture on cyber-bullying that will serve as an excellent primer on this topic.

Ms. Jennifer Tsan, a Computer Science major, has been selected as one of the five undergraduate students to conduct research work at Temple University in summer 2012, supported by NSF CNS 1156574. The selection was made among 90 applicants from about 50 different schools in the nation including leading schools such as Smith College, CMU, Brown University, and UNC-Chapel Hill. .

As a result of collaboration initiated by Drs. Fabrey and Jiang with Temple University, WCU offers programming opportunities for computer science undergraduate students to participate in a research project during summer 2012 . The Temple program is funded through a National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU) grant.

The Computer Science Department sponsors a Women in Computer Science club, whose members include women students and faculty. The goal of the club is to celebrate, inform, support and inspire women in computer science. Club activities include informal meetings, mentoring, lectures, etc. The club also seeks opportunities and scholarships to attend regional or national Women in Computing conferences. The Computer Science Department is home of the Information Security Center (ISC) whose efforts have established West Chester University as a Center for Academic Excellence in Information Assurance (Security) Education. The ISC, made up of most of the Computer Science faculty, offers courseware which has been certified by the NSA to meet standards NSTISSI-4011 (Standard for Information Systems Security) and NSTISSI-4013 (Standard For System Administrators) of the National Training Standards for Information Systems Security Professionals.

The Computer Science Department is also home of the Internet Safety, Ethics Education and Knowledge (ISEEK) Institute dedicated to the understanding of social implications of Internet technologies.

The Computer Science Department is a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Computer and Information Science Educators (PACISE).
